Engagement sessions are always a lot of fun and a chance for us to get to know each other better before your big day! That said, I know there are lots of things to think about before the session and that can be intimidating. The most important ones are to pick a perfect location and decide what to wear! In this blog, I’ll give you my top 5 engagement session outfit tips that will make your engagement session much more beautiful and planning for it easier!

 

1. Choose a Color Palette

When choosing colors for your outfits, I recommend selecting more muted tones. By avoiding ultra-bright, bold colors, it will help bring all the attention to your faces and let the viewer focus on the overall mood of the shoot. The camera loves shades of blush and dusty blue mixed with light neutrals like heather gray, cream, suede, brown, and white. Sometimes it’s also fun to include a pop of bright color like burgundy, emerald or navy!

2. Coordinate Your Looks

As you’re coordinating your look with your man’s, keep in mind that your outfits will look the most cohesive on camera when the color palettes coordinate but don’t necessarily match. You should each aim to wear a different dominant color but stay within a similar color family.

For example, if you’re wearing a cream dress, soft blue earrings, and nude heels with cream being your dominant color, then he could wear a soft blue shirt with navy pants paired with brown leather shoes and a matching belt. Now he has his own dominant color, navy, while still looking cohesive. Normally, my brides-to-be choose their outfits first and then the guys work from there.

3. Go Casual

Most of my couples choose two outfits and will bring one wow-factor look and then another one with a more casual “us on a date” vibe. It allows us to get more variety in the photos which is always a win!

Remember, though: You don’t have to bring two looks if it’s too stressful or you’d rather just stick to one fabulous style. One outfit that you love will be so much better than one outfit you love paired with another that you’re not very excited about. It’s really up to you!

4. Then Dress Up!

I always encourage my couples to find one extra-special look for their session. I know we don’t get a chance to dress up every day, so your shoot is a perfect chance to have some fun and get fancy! There’s no such thing as being too dressed up when it comes to your engagement session. This is a perfect occasion for you to rock a long dress and for him to put on a suit!

5. Flatter Your Features

Everyone’s body is beautiful, but there are little things you can do to make your shape even more gorgeous:

• Long, wide-strap and off-the-shoulder sleeves create an awesome sliming effect on all arms, while skinny straps and strapless dresses have the opposite effect on camera.
• Heels elongate women’s legs, making them look fabulous. Closed-toe heels, in particular, look great on camera because they create one cohesive line from your hip all the way down to your feet.

Bonus tip: Plan a date night! Why not take advantage of being all dressed up? I know the wedding planning process can feel all-consuming, so take some time after the session for the two of you to have some fun together. You deserve it! (And you already look amazing.)
