You might not know this, but I grew up in Ukraine where winters are cold and snowy. When I was little, there was nothing better than playing in the snow all day long and coming back home with wet feet and a red nose! I remember this time with such nostalgia and winter always brings the sweetest childhood memories back to me.
When Isra told me that she wanted snow in her engagement photos, I could hardly contain my excitement. Going on adventures with my couples is my favorite thing, and when that comes with a chance to play in the snow I say, “Heck yes!”
We decided to go to Gold Creek Pond for the session. It’s just an hour away from Seattle and when you get there, you instantly feel like you’re in Narnia! We parked, got ready, and started to make our way to the first location.
We followed the trail for almost a mile and when we finally got to the pond, there they were: 20 boy scouts with their troop leaders! Of course, to get the photos that we envisioned, we had to get off the trail a bit and find a place where there were no people. Without snowshoes that would’ve been mission impossible, that’s for sure.
But then the sweetest thing happened. The boy scouts offered to dig us a trail! Five people on snowshoes made us a pathway and a little round space where I could position my couple so that they weren’t knee-deep in snow. They even gave me and Isra snowshoes so we could get to the spot they’d prepared for us. Honestly, those were the nicest strangers I’d ever met. Thanks to them, we were able to get amazing photos with gorgeous snowy fields as a backdrop.
Once we captured some beautiful images, we returned the snowshoes to our new friends and headed back to the car to warm up a bit and change into second outfits. Every time I know it’s going to be chilly (or downright cold as hell like it was this time), I bring a thermos of my homemade lemon-ginger green tea, and this time, it was pretty much essential. We warmed up, Isra & Ibrahim changed, and we got back on the trail to get a few more photos.
I loved capturing these two and their love, and the wonderful location was such an awesome bonus. It definitely made for an unforgettable experience!
I can’t wait to do many more winter engagement shoots. Let me know if you want one, and we can make it happen!
